Across the United States, certain offenses consistently appear in crime statistics more than others. The most frequently reported crimes involve property and violence, with larceny-theft, burglary, aggravated assault, and motor vehicle theft leading reported incidents. This overview explains each category in practical terms, distinguishing broad attempts or threats from completed acts, clarifying how police define and count offenses, and describing how clearance and reporting rates affect public perception. These patterns reflect longstanding behavioral and economic dynamics rather than short-lived spikes, making them useful reference points for understanding long-term public safety trends.
